Main characteristics of the variety:
- White Roselle (a rare white-calyx variant of Hibiscus sabdariffa) is an annual or perennial shrub. The plant grows to about 1.5–2 meters in height, with dark green leaves and slightly reddish stems. Thriving in warm, humid tropical or subtropical climates, it blooms in summer and autumn. The flowers are ephemeral (opening in the morning and wilting by dusk), leaving behind a fleshy, edible calyx. The calyx of white Roselle offers a mild sweet-sour flavor. Though lower in anthocyanins compared to the red variety, it remains rich in nutrients. Its elegant appearance also makes it popular for ornamental use in gardens or as cut flowers. As a relatively rare cultivar, it requires full sun and well-drained soil. In northern regions, pot cultivation is recommended for winter protection. For consumption, moderation is advised.
