Reynoutria japonica Seeds, available in various quantities from Bellfarm®. This perennial plant yields black-brown fruits and is prized by beekeepers for its unique 'bamboo honey'.
🌱 Seed Quantity Options: Choose from various quantities of Reynoutria japonica Seeds, known as Japanese knotweed, Asian knotweed, including 50, 100, 200, or 500 seeds, sourced directly from Bellfarm®'s dedicated wild harvesting team.
🌱 Plant Characteristics: Reynoutria japonica is a robust perennial herbaceous plant characterized by its thick rhizomes and upright, hollow stems that can reach heights of up to 2 meters (6.5 FT). The leaves are broad ovate or elliptic-ovate, almost leathery in texture, with a pointed apex and a wide, wedge-shaped or rounded base. Its sheathing bracts form cone-shaped inflorescences, and the flowers, which appear in August, are monoecious with separate male and female plants. The pale green perianth gives way to egg-shaped glossy black-brown fruits that mature between September and October.
🌱 Growing Conditions: This plant thrives in warm, humid climates and is adaptable to various soil types, although it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions well. It exhibits a strong resistance to drought and cold, with its rhizomatous growth pattern allowing rapid regrowth and branching of stems after the dormancy period. By late spring, the plant reaches its maximum height before flowering begins.
🌱 Beekeeping Value: Beekeepers value Reynoutria japonica for its importance as a nectar source for honeybees, especially during periods of limited floral resources. The resulting monofloral honey, often referred to as ''bamboo honey'' in northeastern U.S. regions, has a mild flavor reminiscent of buckwheat honey but with its distinct characteristics.
🌱 Planting Instructions: To maximize seed germination rates, soak Reynoutria japonica seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours, followed by a thorough rinse. Sow the treated seeds evenly on the soil surface, covering them with a layer of soil approximately 1 to 2 cm deep. Adjust the spacing between seeds to 25 to 30 cm based on soil conditions. After sowing, gently press down on the soil and maintain moderate moisture levels. Avoid excessive watering to prevent seed rot while ensuring adequate sunlight exposure. Consider covering the seeds with moist sand or compost to retain optimal moisture levels. Once the seedlings reach a suitable height, transplant them to fertile, well-ventilated, and sunny locations, taking care not to damage the roots during transplanting.
